Farmers learn about harvesting for cellulosic ethanol
Farmers gathered in a corn field near Emmetsburg, Iowa on November 3rd to see the newest technology for collecting and transporting corn cobs—an important step in POET’s plan to produce cellulosic ethanol from biomass. At POET’s Project LIBERTY Field Day, 16 companies showcased equipment to help make the process of harvesting cobs and residue quick, easy and profitable. At the same time, officials from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Department of Energy talked with farmers about money to help procure equipment and matching payments for biomass. Iowa’s harvest is latest since 1951
Iowa’s corn and soybean harvest is the latest in 58 years. That’s the word from Iowa state climatologist Harry Hillaker. He says on November 1st of 1951, corn harvest was about eight percent complete with soybean harvest at 55 percent. The most recent Iowa crop progress report put corn at 18 percent and soybeans at 54 percent. Hillaker also reports that last month was the wettest October since 1881. Iowa recorded six-point-three inches in October—normal rainfall is two-point-five inches.
Some safety reminders for harvest
This is a very busy and dangerous time on the farm. With the delay in harvest this year, things are going to be more rushed than usual plus, with Daylight Savings Time now over, more work will be done at night. Cheryl Skjolaas with the University of Wisconsin Cooperative Center for Agricultural Safety and Health says there are a couple of very important steps to take if you are going to be running machinery on the road.
